Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol (SIOP) was developed out of a desire to have a common language about quality sheltered content teaching. Through a research-based process and piloting by actual classroom teachers (http://www.siopinstitute.net/research.html), an observation checklist was created that covers the instructional process from the early planning stages through delivery of the lesson to the assessment of student learning.
The SIOP model is divided into eight major components. The eight components are:
